Ways to play squash

Not sure where to start with squash? There are a few easy ways to get started.

Learn with other beginners, get guidance from a coach, join a club, or book a court and have a relaxed hit with friends.

Whether you’re brand new, coming back after time away, or just looking for something active to do nearby, there’s a way to start playing squash that can suit you.

You don’t need to know all the rules, have the right kit or know exactly what you’re doing. Choose what feels comfortable, and take it from there.

Learn squash in a group

Group sessions are one of the best ways to get into squash if you want to learn with others.

They’re guided, social and built around helping you get started. You’ll pick up the basics with support from a coach or session leader, spend time on court with people at a similar stage, and start to get a feel for the game through simple activities and rallies.

They can also be a good option if you’re coming back after a break, or if you’re not quite sure where to begin.

Get started with squash coaching

One-to-one squash coaching can help you learn at your own pace and focus on the parts of the game that matter most to you.

You might want to understand the rules, improve your movement, build your technique, or feel more comfortable on court. A coach will give you clear, practical guidance based on where you’re starting from.

There’s no jargon and no expectation that you’ll know what you’re doing straight away – just support to help you improve and feel more confident on court.

You can also start by booking a court at your local leisure centre or squash club and have a relaxed hit with friends.  Play singles. Try doubles. Keep score – or don’t. It’s a fun, informal way to move more, have a laugh, and get stuck into the game together.

Join a squash club

Joining a squash club can give you regular opportunities to play, meet people and feel part of something week to week.

Many clubs offer social sessions, club nights, beginner groups, coaching and friendly leagues, so you can choose the level and format that suits you. It’s a good way to build confidence, keep improving and enjoy the social side of squash.

Play squash your way

Social and relaxed or competitive and structured, squash can be whatever you want it to be.

You can start with friends, learn with a coach, join a group or become part of a club community. Choose the option that suits you, take it at your own pace, and build from there – you’ll soon see how quickly it becomes something you want to come back to, week after week.
