How-to

What is squash?

Squash is a fun, fast-paced racket sport, usually played by two people on an indoor court.

Players take turns hitting a small rubber ball against the front wall, with the aim of keeping the rally going and hitting a shot their opponent can’t return – often in quick, energetic exchanges.

Squash can also be adapted for other spaces, such as school sports halls or community spaces, using a portable rebound net.

Whether you’re on court or playing somewhere else, it’s simple to get started and a great way to get moving from your very first hit.

You can learn with a coach, join a group or club, or just book a court and have a go with a friend.

However you play, the aim is the same: keep the rally going and enjoy the buzz of the game.

What is squash like to play?

Squash is the kind of sport many people start to enjoy very quickly – often from their very first hit.

It’s active, engaging and easy to pick up. You can step on court competitively or socially, push yourself, or take things at your own pace.  Even a short game can help you switch off, move well and come away feeling good.

You’ll move, react, think tactically and laugh – all in the same rally.

Some rallies will be quick, others can last for ages. And as your confidence grows, you may find yourself wanting to play more – and for longer.

Who can play squash?

Squash can be a great option if you’re looking to move more, have fun and feel good while trying something new.

You don’t need to be the fastest, fittest or most confident to give it a go.

It’s a sport where you can start slowly, learn as you go, and build your skills from there.

So whether your goals are to improve your fitness, meet new friends, try a new sport, or get back into the game after a break, there’s a place for you on court.

Is squash difficult to learn?

No – you don’t need to know every rule or get everything right to start playing squash. Many people find they make quick progress once they get started.

The basics are simple: hit the ball off the front wall, take turns, and keep the rally going. That’s all you need to begin with – you’ll soon pick up the rest as you play.

You don’t have to play a full match straight away either.

Many people start by simply rallying, getting used to the ball and building confidence from there – whether that’s having a hit with a friend or joining a relaxed beginner session.

There’s no one ‘right’ way to get involved.

If you want to improve your technique and confidence, you can work with a coach or leader in a one-to-one or group setting, or join a club or leisure centre to learn from other players in a friendly environment.

What do you need to play squash?

You don’t need much to get started with squash.

Most people begin with just a comfortable pair of trainers and some clothes they can move around easily in.

Many leisure centres, clubs and schools may have rackets or balls you can borrow or hire, so check with them before you visit to find out what’s on offer.

Take your first step on court

Squash is easy to get into, a fun way to stay active, and a sport you can play your own way. Whether you’re picking up a racket for the first time, getting back into the game, or simply looking to try something new, you can find a way that works for you.

Find a session near you, grab a racket, and give it a go – you might be surprised how quickly you get into it and want to play again.
