Your stories

Share your squash stories

Has squash helped you build confidence, make friends, improve your wellbeing, or simply given you a sport you love?

We’re on the hunt for short, inspiring stories from players on an ongoing basis to feature here on Play Squash and our socials – real experiences that show why people enjoy playing squash and what keeps them coming back.

We’re not looking for the perfect writer, just people across the community with great stories to tell. We’re seeking honest experiences that could help someone else feel more confident about picking up a racket for the first time.

FAQs

What kind of stories are you looking for?

We’re looking for real stories from players about what squash means to them. That could be about building confidence, making friends, improving wellbeing, finding a sense of belonging, staying active, discovering a sport you love, or overcoming nerves about getting started. Your story doesn't need to be dramatic or extraordinary. Often, the most relatable stories are the ones that inspire others the most! You can read an example of a story here.

I’m not a writer, but I’ve got a great story to tell. Can I still take part?

Absolutely. We’re looking for honest, inspiring stories, not perfect writing. If your story's selected, our marketing team will work with you to shape the piece and make sure it reads well. You’ll be supported throughout the process, and nothing will be published without your approval.

I’m nervous about sharing my story. What should I do?

That’s completely understandable. If your story is selected, we’ll work closely with you and make sure you're comfortable with what's being shared. Nothing will be published without your approval.

Who can submit a story?

Any player can submit a story. You can submit your own story, or you can put forward someone else (with their permission) who you think has a story worth telling. If you nominate someone else, we’ll only progress the story with their permission.

What if my story isn’t “interesting” enough?

If squash has had a positive impact on your life, even in a small way, your story could help someone else feel confident enough to give it a go. We’re especially interested in stories about:

  • Feeling nervous before starting, then realising squash was more welcoming than expected
  • Making friends or finding a sense of community
  • Building confidence on or off court
  • Improving mental wellbeing or relieving stress
  • Discovering you didn’t need to be “fit enough” to start
  • Enjoying the workout and wanting to keep coming back

But this isn't an exhaustive list. If squash means something different to you, we’d still love to hear about it.

What happens after I submit a story?

We’ll review the submissions and, if your story's selected, we’ll get in touch to talk through the next steps. This may include asking a few follow-up questions, shaping the story with you, and agreeing where and how it could be used.

When will my story be published?

If your story's selected, we’ll contact you to let you know when and where it may be featured. As this is an ongoing project, some stories may be used soon, while others may be saved for future website, social media or campaign activity.

Will every story be published?

While we can’t guarantee that every story will be published, we’re grateful for every submission. Even if your story isn't used straight away, we may keep it on file for possible future use. We’ll contact you before anything's published.

Where might my story be used?

Selected stories may be featured on England Squash channels, including englandsquash.com, social media, newsletters or campaign materials.

We’ll always explain how we’d like to use your story before anything's published.

I'm a coach - can I submit a story?

If you're coach who plays squash and has a personal player story that you feel could inspire new players to take up the sport, we'd love to hear from you. Equally, we're always on the look out for stories from coaches and clubs who are making an impact on the game - anything from driving innovation to growing the game - please email participation@englandsquash.com.

Will my story get a credit?

Where possible, we’ll credit you by name alongside your story. Before anything's published, we’ll agree with you how you’d like to be referred to - for example, using your full name, first name only, club name, or another suitable description.

In some cases, the format or channel may affect how a credit appears, but we’ll always make sure you’re comfortable with how your story's shared.

I have a question about the process - who do I contact?

Please contact our marketing team at marketing@englandsquash.com who can answer your questions.
